Power and Exclusion from Power

by Mary Ocher

/
1.
The Curtain 02:29
The curtain is hiding the truth / from the masses The truth / that we are all mere tools in its hands The hands that hold on / to power and justice No justice, but power / is all it commends
2.
Put your dreams on a shelf watch them wither away watch them turn into hay watch them go the way of all things Love is not a place I was born in the year gas prices were low May day parades were to proceed as before As though nothing had changed nothing had blown up Everything's rotten, everything must go Love is not a place...
3.
4.
The creases of your skin they grin in silence whatever lurks within unseen, unfolds And I, who's locked and silenced Whatever lurks within unseen, unfolds Life is elsewhere but not around us Remember, these are the good days and I... must ask... why? Why must I wait? For trucks with torn up bodies, parading around the massacre Remember, Babi Yar, Remember, lest you've forgotten

Who are doing an incredible job restoring damaged homes and cultural spaces, among other humanitarian tasks.

I wrote these with the Soviet Union in mind, as well as another place which is quite familiar to me, which occupies and occupies some more.

My grandmother was born in Kharkiv, where most of the maternal family line comes from, my father's side is from Vinnytsia. I was born in Moscow, admittedly a jew, a Ukrainian jew. And now the wretched owner of two passports that bring nothing but shame.
